Before jumping in and buying any old espresso machine, it is important for you to get to know about the different types of machines and what they can achieve in terms of both taste and ease of use.

If you already know about the different types of espresso machines and just want to see the best espresso machine we recommend, skip to the bottom of this page.

You’ll want to know your steam driven espresso machine from your pump powered machine and what about super-automatic vs semi-automatic? Continue reading to find out what all of this means and more importantly which espresso machine you should be buying in 2017…

What Is  A Steam Driven Espresso Machine?

The original espresso machines were steam driven, these machines used steam power to push the hot water through the coffee grounds. By boiling water and producing steam, this also produces pressure, it is this pressure which is used to force the hot water through the ground coffee beans, in term producing an espresso.

Although this is the original form of espresso machine, you will still see many steam powered machines on the market. You will notice that the steam powered units are the cheapest available and are often marketed as budget espresso machines. The reason for their lower price, is simply because they do not make the best cup of coffee in comparison to electric, pump powered espresso machines.

While they can still produce a fairly decent cup of coffee, which is marginally better than what you would achieve with a french press / cafetiere. We would highly recommend purchasing a pump driven machine over a steam powered unit. This is not to say we would not recommend purchasing one at all, if for instance you only want to spend say $50 and do not mind an inferior cup of coffee, then a steam driven machine may be all that you need.

If you are interested in buying a cheaper, steam-driven espresso machine as an entry level unit. Then we recommend the Mr Coffee 4-Cup Espresso Machine with built in milk frother. At under $50 this little espresso machine will give you a good entry point and satisfactory results.

What About Pump Driven Espresso Machines?

As we have already briefly mentioned, pump-driven machines give far better results than steam-driven espresso machines. Instead of relying on the pressure produced from generating steam, these machines use a proper electric pump in order to achieve the optimal pressure. This means that you will be getting a true, quality espresso.

If you would like to purchase a pump-drive espresso machine (good choice), next you will need to decide if you will need a super-automatic or semi-automatic machine…

Super-Automatic Vs Semi-Automatic

While it is perfectly normal to assume that a super-automatic machine is better than a semi-automatic machine. This is not always the case, the main difference between these two types of machines is that a super-automatic espresso machine does pretty much everything for you, while a semi-automatic espresso machine requires more user input.

However, don’t be put off by semi-automatic machines requiring more user input! Semi-automatic machines ultimately give you more control over many different aspects of the process, allowing you to fine tune your perfect cup of coffee.
